The Chinese name for the site is Shilin石林, which translates to “stone forest.” And let me tell you, it’s the perfect name. The rock formations there are like nothing I’ve ever seen before and is something you shouldn’t skip on your trip to China.
  • The history of the Stone Forest dates back over 270 million years when the area was under sea. Over time, nature did it’s thing and left behind an incredible maze of towering rocks in all kinds of shapes.
  • One of the most interesting facts about the site is that it was a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. Another exciting thing is that it’s one of the most visited tourist attractions in China.

Getting to Kunming Stone Forest is easy and affordable, and there are several options to choose from depending on your preferences and budget. As someone who has visited this incredible site, let me share with you some tips on how to get there.

Visiting by Bus

One way to get to Kunming Stone Forest is by bus, which is a great option for budget travelers or those who prefer public transportation. Buses run regularly from the Kunming East Bus Station to the Stone Forest, and the trip takes about two hours. The cost is around 34 RMB (less than $5 USD) per person each way.

Arriving by Taxi/Didi

If you prefer more comfort and flexibility, you can also take a taxi or hire a private car. Taxis are widely available in Kunming, and you can negotiate a flat rate with the driver or use a ride-hailing app like DiDi. The trip takes about one and a half hours and costs around 200-300 RMB ($30-$45 USD) one way. This was was our preferred method of transport, as it’s less hassle and splitting the fare between two people means its relatively cost effective.

How to buy an Entrance Ticket

When planning your trip, it is good to know that you can buy your tickets in advance. You can buy tickets online or at the ticket office in Kunming or at the Stone Forest. The entrance fee is around 130RMB ($18 USD) per person, and it includes access to all areas of the site. Daniel and I just turned up and bought a ticket at the entrance. There weren’t many people and it was an easy process. However, we did go during covid times, which might have made it less crowded.

What to Wear

The Stone Forest features peculiar rock formations of all shapes and sizes along its various routes, visible at different heights. Visitors can explore caves and climb stairs that run through the formations, while other areas offer an elevated view of the forest. In addition, local performers serenade visitors with songs and dances, with traditional music heard from various points throughout the park.

Daniel and I stayed at CitiGo in Kunming, which is an ideal choice for couples travelling for a few days. It boasts a convenient location, modern amenities and a laundry service on the rooftop. Most importantly, it is only 6km from Kunming Railway Station, making travel to your next destination swift and simple. As well as this, it is opposite a beautiful lake where activities such as pedal boating and sightseeing are possible – not to mention the opportunity to pick up some souvenirs at the same time! Surprisingly affordable, CitiGo cost us 400 RMB for one night – giving us plenty of time to explore the lake and its surrounding area.

What to Eat in Kunming:

Yunnan cuisine is a must-try when visiting Kunming. Don’t miss out on the delicious rice noodles, also known as “crossing the bridge noodles,” which is a local specialty. Other must-try dishes include the Yunnan-style fried cheese, spicy fish hotpot, and the famous Yunnan ham. Local restaurants like Yun Hai Yao and Shi Fang Jie offer delicious and authentic Yunnan cuisine. If you cannot find these places, just walk around your area and it won’t take you long to find delicious, authentic Chinese food.

Climate:

The reason Kunming is known as the “City of Eternal Spring” is due to its mild and pleasant climate all year-round. The temperature in the Stone Forest area ranges from 15-25°C (59-77°F) in the summer and 7-15°C (44-59°F) in the winter. It’s important to pack accordingly and check the weather forecast before visiting to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip. We visited during July in the summer and the weather was perfect!
