Visiting London for just one day? Sure, it’s not very long, but you’ll be able to see many of the city’s highlights in such a short time. In this article, I will share with you my top recommendations for historical sites, restaurants, and bars you could fit into your one-day itinerary. Although a 1 Day London Itinerary seems short, there is plenty you could check out if you have a simple day layover or are looking to go into the city for the day. It’s important to note that this article focuses more on the historical sites than other activities in London.
You may want to go shopping in Oxford Street, eat at Covent Garden, watch a theatre show in Leicester Square, visit Camden Market or party in Shoreditch. Maybe you would like to visit the London Museum, but that would take a day in itself. The point is, London is huge and this article covers the famous landmarks to see in one day.
When I was younger, I always told myself that one day I would visit London. The only big city that I visited in the past was New York City and my expectations were high. I asked myself what is there to do in London for a day? London is such a huge city that conquering every site is near impossible. However, we visited many touristy hot spots in one day, so you can too! Parts of London felt like a world created by Harry Potter and the endless pubs and restaurants made for a great food tour. Plus, the historic sites were well maintained and made me imagine all the stories they held.
For travelling around the city, the best way is by train or bus. You can select an all day travel card at any train station and this will allow you to go to all zones of London. Alternatively, you can use any visa/debit card and tap the circular pads as you travel around London. This will only charge you for the places you visit, which works out cheaper. London has what’s called an Oyster card, which allows you to put money on to it and you can use this to tap your way around London. However, this isn’t convenient or cheap if you are travelling just for the day or aren’t a resident.
There are many historical sites in London and you will want to visit most during your one day itinerary. We explored Buckingham Palace, Horse Guards Parade, The London Eye, Tower Bridge, Big Ben and Trafalgar Square all in one day. Luckily, all of these sites are relatively close together, which makes it easier to squeeze them all in. Plus, you will most likely see the Shard, Gherkin, St Paul’s Cathedral and other famous buildings on your travels around the city. It may seem impossible to fit all these recommendations into your 1 Day London Itinerary. However, if you are solely determined to check out all the historical sites, then its definitely possible. Below are my recommendations of which sites you can see in a day.
If you are only visiting for the day then you cannot miss the iconic Buckingham Palace. To make your visit more special, you can watch the changing of the guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace and may be able to spot a royal! Experiencing the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace was a memorable event and a perfect day. Arriving early around 10:15am secured a prime viewing spot amidst the lively crowd of families and tourists eagerly awaiting the ceremony. The ceremony takes place at 11am, but make sure to get there early otherwise you’ll be trying to climb the walls to see. The guards, donned in their distinctive uniforms, marched with precision, evoking a strong sense of tradition. There was also a walking tour. Although Charlotte and I opted to observe from the sidelines, occasionally catching snippets of the guide’s commentary.
For those planning to witness this event, arriving 30 minutes to an hour beforehand is recommended for a good vantage point. Checking the schedule in advance is crucial, as timings may vary. Be mindful of tourist seasons; during our August visit, thousands gathered to witness the change. Fortunately, we managed to secure an excellent view. Lastly, paying attention to announcements and instructions from the guards or staff enhances the overall experience. This is a top of my list for things to add to your 1 Day London Itinerary.
Arriving at Big Ben was indeed a childhood dream come true and was one of the most exciting parts of my London adventure. The size and intricate design of the clock tower were even more impressive up close. The chimes of Big Ben, marking the passing hours, added a special touch to the experience. To make the most of my visit, I got there early in the morning, which not only meant fewer people but also a peaceful atmosphere that allowed me to take in the details and snap some great photos. FYI, if you have time, pass by Westminster abbey
I also took the opportunity to explore Parliament Square, which surrounds Big Ben. The square is filled with statues and monuments dedicated to significant historical figures, providing an extra layer of interest to the visit. The views from different angles were unique and allowed me to appreciate the grandeur of this iconic landmark. Before planning a visit, it’s a good idea to check for any construction or maintenance updates to ensure you get the best experience. I jokingly told Charlotte a while ago when Big Ben was under construction that I would not come to London until he was ready. Overall, seeing Big Ben in person highlighted my time in London and makes my number 2 for things to add to your 1 Day London Itinerary.
Observing the London Eye was an exciting part of my trip, even though I didn’t end up riding it. This giant wheel offers a wide-reaching view of the city. I noticed that mornings and evenings are less crowded, making it an excellent time to visit if you want to avoid long lines. The capsules have spacious windows, ensuring everyone gets a good view. There’s also informative material inside about the landmarks you can see. Book tickets in advance online can save you time and often comes with a discount. Despite not taking the ride, it was still a unique experience and a wonderful way to observe London from above. This makes my number 3 for things to add to your 1 Day London Itinerary.
Trafalgar Square was a lively spot during my visit. It’s a large open area with people walking around, enjoying the surroundings. The tall column in the center with the statue on top is quite striking. I took some time to sit on the steps and people-watch. It’s a good idea to visit during the day when a lot is happening. If you’re interested in art, the National Gallery nearby is worth a visit. Planning to stay in the morning or early afternoon can help you avoid the largest crowds. One incredible moment for me was seeing the Canada House near the square. It added an extra touch of interest to the experience. Overall, it’s an animated spot and a nice place to take a break and makes my number 4 for things to add to your 1 Day London Itinerary.
Seeing the Tower Bridge was lovely to see on this trip. It’s a sturdy and impressive structure spanning the River Thames. I found it best to approach it from different angles to get a full view. Walking across the bridge, I enjoyed the view of the river and the bustling activity around me. It’s a good idea to visit during off-peak hours to avoid the heaviest crowds. Also, taking a moment to appreciate the Tower Bridge in the distance adds to the experience. Overall, it’s a must-see landmark and an excellent spot for lovely photos. This makes my number 5 for things to add to your 1 Day London Itinerary.
If you plan on doing a day trip outside of the city, check out Richmond. Richmond is a nice part of London, with a park, river and good restaurants. If you are a fan of the show Ted Lasso then you will love Richmond as there is the pub that the show was filmed in. Surrounding that pub is a lot of souvenirs and photos of the show. The best part of Richmond for me was visiting Twickenham Stadium to watch the Fiji vs England Rugby match. It was a good place to walk around, eat, check out the Ted Lasso filming spots and watch the rugby. Obviously, you wouldn’t be able to fit Richmond in your 1 day itinerary, but if you have longer then its a definite bonus.
For my 1 day London itinerary, food was atop of the list. London’s dining scene is a true reflection of its multicultural makeup. You can find a wide range of international cuisines from all over the world. Food markets across the city offer an array of flavorful dishes for everyone to enjoy. Whether exploring historic neighborhoods or seeking the latest food trends, London’s restaurants provide a diverse and delicious dining experience for every taste. Although it may seem impossible for your stomach to handle all these food recommendations, here are places you could eat at and fit into your 1 Day London Itinerary.
If you have one day in London, check out Spitalfields Food Market in Shoreditch. The market is a hub for food enthusiasts. Located in the vibrant streets of Shoreditch, it offers an array of culinary delights in an open-air setting. The market showcases a diverse range of vendors, each specializing in unique offerings, from fresh produce to international street food. Visitors can explore various flavors and cuisines, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a taste of London’s culinary diversity.
The best way to approach the market is to either grab a small bite from a vendor that catches your eye rather than go for a big meal where you will stay full. One place I ate at sold Jamaican patties, which was always a childhood favorite of mine growing up. I had some room for dessert and found myself at a cookie pop-up shop where I satisfied my sweet tooth. The lively atmosphere, combined with the mouthwatering aromas wafting through the stalls, creates a sensory experience that will leave any food lover satisfied and eager to return. This was one of the hidden gems that I discovered and makes my number 1 for places to eat for your 1 Day London Itinerary.
If you are in London for a day and don’t mind spending a bit on your meal, check out The Savoy. The Savoy restaurant in London, owned by world-renowned chef Gordon Ramsay, embodies a sense of culinary excellence in a setting of timeless luxury. Located within the iconic Savoy Hotel, the restaurant shares its space with the hotel and many retail shops. My goal was to head straight to the restaurant for what I now know was the best meal in London.
The dining area is nicely decorated, creating a fancy but comfortable atmosphere that matches the hotel’s old-world charm. Gordon Ramsay supervises the menu, which offers a mix of tasty British and global dishes, all prepared with care and skill. Whether perfectly cooked seafood or indulgent desserts, each plate shows a dedication to top-notch ingredients. The staff is friendly and quick to assist, making The Savoy an excellent pick for people looking for a fancy yet friendly place to eat in London.
I had my sights on the famous beef wellington, and let me tell you, that was hands down the best one I had yet. If you are not worried about spending over your budget and would like to bring your significant other to one of the best restaurants in London, the Savoy will not disappoint you. This makes my number 2 for places to eat for your 1 Day London Itinerary.
The Ivy restaurant in London is a distinguished dining establishment known for its timeless elegance. Situated in the heart of the city, it exudes an air of sophistication without feeling overly formal. The interior portrays classic decor elements, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The menu features a selection of well-prepared dishes, blending traditional British flavours with contemporary twists. From seasonal salads to hearty mains, each plate showcases quality ingredients and thoughtful presentation. The attentive service adds to the dining experience, making The Ivy a reliable choice for those seeking a tasteful and enjoyable meal in London. Pro tip: If you opt for the beef wellington, you must wait an hour before it is ready. I did not want to do my order over and went with a classic burger and chips. This makes my number 3 for places to eat for your 1 Day London Itinerary.
My day out in London consisted of finding fish and chips. Poppies Fish and Chips, located in central London, offers a delightful throwback to traditional British seaside dining. Stepping inside feels like a trip back in time, with its cozy, retro atmosphere and vintage decor. The menu’s star attraction, the fish and chips, doesn’t disappoint. The fish is tender and encased in a satisfyingly crispy batter, while the hand-cut chips complement it perfectly. Served with a side of mushy peas, it’s a classic combination that hits all the right notes.
The only downside we experienced was the price, as it was double the cost of any other fish and chips that you could get elsewhere outside of London. Whether you’re a local seeking nostalgia or a visitor looking to savour an iconic British dish, Poppies Fish and Chips is a worthwhile stop for a memorable culinary experience. This makes my number 1 for places to eat for your 4 Day London Itinerary.
There are several Poppies Fish and Chips located in the city, but the one we opted to eat at was located in Spitalfields. Other locations include Soho and Camden.
Soho: W1D 6HW
Spitalfields: E1 6QR
Camden: NW1 8NP

The terrace itself was thoughtfully laid out, with comfortable seating arrangements that encouraged guests to linger and appreciate the beauty around them.
The atmosphere was relaxed, allowing for easy conversation and enjoyment of the surroundings. The bar had a rooftop DJ playing music the whole time we were there, and they even had someone bring and play their bongo drums, which meshed well with what the DJ was playing. The bar menu offered a variety of well-crafted drinks, each complementing the experience. I went for the beer because It’s my beverage of choice. The attentive service ensured a pleasant visit, adding to the overall positive impression of the venue. It was a delightful moment, sipping a drink while taking in the remarkable view of London’s cityscape. This makes my number 2 for pubs/bars to add to your 1 Day London Itinerary.
Stepping into The Alchemist in London felt like entering a laboratory of liquid wonders. The menu was a delightful fusion of art and mixology, featuring an array of imaginative drinks that pushed the boundaries of traditional cocktail-making. One standout was their signature “Colour Changing One.” Another highlight was the “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party,” an enchanting blend of gin, tea, and citrus in a smoke-filled teapot.
